Birl takes a big step forward Source: Mississauga News, By: Dave Winer

March 7, 2008 - He's been an up-and-coming star in Canadian gymnastics for the past few years, but the stage got a lot bigger for Mississauga’s Jaylan Birl on the weekend.
Representing Canada at the Junior Berlin Cup International last Saturday, Birl made the international coaches take notice when he won the all-around silver medal.
Considered a test competition for the Junior European Championships, the 19 participating nations from four continents sent their best athletes to the meet.
And when the final scores were tabulated, Birl had defeated the top Germans, Americans, Japanese, and Australian athletes in attendance, placing second only to the number one athlete from France.
On the way to claiming the silver medal, Birl showed all-around ability placing in the top six in all events, including a first on vault and second on floor.
While Birl excelled, the Canadian team could only muster an eighth-place finish.
Birl has trained under coach Chris Foo for the past five years at Gymnastics Mississauga, which is located at the Hershey SportZone.
Gymnastics Mississauga is a non-profit organization affiliated with the City of Mississauga. In September 2007 we have moved to the Hershey Centre SportZone, Mississauga's new flagship sports centre.
